The extinction of the human race as we know it

It is definite that our race is to come into extinction sooner or later for causes drastic and unexplainable. We have surpassed various obstacles and overcame distinct challenges yet our individual tendencies inevitably contribute to our own extinction. We have now ultimately moved closer to our own pitiful destiny as society tends to be careless.

The article “Environment group to prosecute Detroit firm”, written by Peter Gorrie an Environment Reporter of the Toronto Star, is thematically linked to the essay written in class for its clear representation on how careless society is and the efforts of an environment group to right the wrongs of a provincial catastrophe.

Destruction and devastation occurs around the world because of the people’s lack of care. Society cares for no one but their individual selves. In both texts society’s insignificant actions have serious consequences and should be thought out before done. We have the tendency to pollute wherever we travel and go, not realizing that a casual piece of paper we are likely to throw out is a benefactor to pollution, feeding our extinction. We have various effects on the environment which shows how careless we are thus factoring a new chapter to our inevitable extinction. In the article, Peter Gorrie states that a U.S company has supposedly dumped toxic mercury on to the province through an indirect factor. It is said that the mercury has leaked through the chimney stacks of two of the nine coal fuelled electricity generating stations emitting 300 kilograms of mercury each year. Mercury a substance that attacks the human’s nervous system has contaminated the St. Clair River at the same time violating the Fisheries Act of Canada. This factor can inevitably contribute to our own extinction as one gram of mercury can poison a 10 hectare lake affecting our water supply and degrading of our species.
Society’s lack of care has a great negative effect on the environment and the economy. In one way as we try to clean up the various factors affecting this pitiful destiny we also end up feeding a new problem at the end. Our lack of care has dealt with the downfall of the environment but now financial matters are affected by it as well. In the article the American company is to pay off any known damages because of their leakage alongside an advanced filter worth one billion dollars U.S. It is likely that the company will be sued for any potential health hazards in the future as mercury goes into the air as a vapour and stays floating for a while.

Our inevitable extinction is progressing throughout various paces as there are different factors affecting the degrading of our race. Our tendencies make our demise more clear, as our individual traits benefactor distinct ways of our own extinction. The lack of care is a tendency which society shares. We are careless of what is happening around the world and should spend some time to fix corruptions. We are careless, not showing any potential care for the environment, or species living and interacting within it. All of which factoring a certain catastrophe in which we are surely going to go extinct.

Thematic connections between The Veldt and Surrogates

Technology is evolving and revolutionizing itself throughout the decades as many new inventions and other necessities are being invented for exploration and daily usage. For example, 50 to 100 years ago wooden boats were used to travel the vast oceans and rivers. In the present however, we no longer utilize wooden ships to travel the waters, instead we use metal cruisers, made of aluminum and alloys. Technology has advanced greatly throughout the years making our old means of life primitive. True, technology is a positive concept; yet is it the best? Technology has different attributes and components which factors a negative effect on people as it influences minors and the rest of society to act in a horrific manner.

The short story, “The Veldt” is thematically connected to the new 2009 science fiction film “Surrogates” (both Medias portray how technology can negatively influence society, as malfunctions and corruptions produce the worse possible outcome). According to both stories the use of technology is misused and mishandled alongside the development of anxiety in society. “The Veldt” a short story written by Ray Bradbury revolves around the concept that technology is taken advantage of and handled vehemently creating fear within the parents. Neighboring the new installments which the family invested in there is an additional source of technology which creates and stimulates a virtual atmosphere in the nursery. In various cases horrifying scenarios are seen as the protagonists venture off to the nursery to see a menacing scene of a brutal and bloody Africa. Anxiety and fear is raised into thought as the horrifying stimulation dreamt by their children was one portion of the many reproductions from the past. The short story demonstrates that technology negatively influence minors and has corruptions considering the fact that it is usually misused and mishandled by children. “Surrogates” the film directed by Jonathan Mostow, examines a plot in which remotely controlled androids called” Surrogates” are living and interacting in a flawless universe without violence and corruption. Society lives peacefully in this artificial utopia until an act of murder sends society into turmoil. The advanced technology in robotics displayed the safety of humans indoor accompanied with the ability to be remotely intertwined with a robotic avatar to interact with one another. Humanity seemed peaceful and satisfied as there was great hope in machines. As the suspense increased during the movie, a feeling of anxiety and agitation was shown in the characters as two surrogates remotely linked to human users are murdered by a highly sophisticated weapon. A source of betrayal and fear is found as technology corrupted the trust between machines and humanity acknowledging that the peaceful town was sent into chaos as a murder is jolted after many years depressing the bond. While technology tends to increase throughout decades, influences on machinery become more repugnant considering that every action is followed up by a downfall.

Technology is an amazing asset of today’s society. We peruse technology repeatedly in a normal workday. However, as it continuously develops and grows, there are several negative influences and effects which over take the positive factors we have grown accustomed to. Though technology has made us leave the primitive era, it too has its share of negative aspects, which makes us think if technology is worth the trouble. True, it adds ease and comfort to life and reduces stress, however the key concept that should be focused on, is that it demonstrates a supremacy over minors, who are majorly influenced by it and produces a negative inspiration to society.
