Technology is evolving and revolutionizing itself throughout the decades as many new inventions and other necessities are being invented for exploration and daily usage. For example, 50 to 100 years ago wooden boats were used to travel the vast oceans and rivers. In the present however, we no longer utilize wooden ships to travel the waters, instead we use metal cruisers, made of aluminum and alloys. Technology has advanced greatly throughout the years making our old means of life primitive. True, technology is a positive concept; yet is it the best? Technology has different attributes and components which factors a negative effect on people as it influences minors and the rest of society to act in a horrific manner.
The short story, “The Veldt” is thematically connected to the new 2009 science fiction film “Surrogates” (both Medias portray how technology can negatively influence society, as malfunctions and corruptions produce the worse possible outcome). According to both stories the use of technology is misused and mishandled alongside the development of anxiety in society. “The Veldt” a short story written by Ray Bradbury revolves around the concept that technology is taken advantage of and handled vehemently creating fear within the parents. Neighboring the new installments which the family invested in there is an additional source of technology which creates and stimulates a virtual atmosphere in the nursery. In various cases horrifying scenarios are seen as the protagonists venture off to the nursery to see a menacing scene of a brutal and bloody Africa. Anxiety and fear is raised into thought as the horrifying stimulation dreamt by their children was one portion of the many reproductions from the past. The short story demonstrates that technology negatively influence minors and has corruptions considering the fact that it is usually misused and mishandled by children. “Surrogates” the film directed by Jonathan Mostow, examines a plot in which remotely controlled androids called” Surrogates” are living and interacting in a flawless universe without violence and corruption. Society lives peacefully in this artificial utopia until an act of murder sends society into turmoil. The advanced technology in robotics displayed the safety of humans indoor accompanied with the ability to be remotely intertwined with a robotic avatar to interact with one another. Humanity seemed peaceful and satisfied as there was great hope in machines. As the suspense increased during the movie, a feeling of anxiety and agitation was shown in the characters as two surrogates remotely linked to human users are murdered by a highly sophisticated weapon. A source of betrayal and fear is found as technology corrupted the trust between machines and humanity acknowledging that the peaceful town was sent into chaos as a murder is jolted after many years depressing the bond. While technology tends to increase throughout decades, influences on machinery become more repugnant considering that every action is followed up by a downfall.
Technology is an amazing asset of today’s society. We peruse technology repeatedly in a normal workday. However, as it continuously develops and grows, there are several negative influences and effects which over take the positive factors we have grown accustomed to. Though technology has made us leave the primitive era, it too has its share of negative aspects, which makes us think if technology is worth the trouble. True, it adds ease and comfort to life and reduces stress, however the key concept that should be focused on, is that it demonstrates a supremacy over minors, who are majorly influenced by it and produces a negative inspiration to society.
